School Sport Coordinator update
As part of the Schools’ Sport Partnership (SSP), Churchill and our Primary Feeder Schools have been busy raising the participation and performance of young people through sport and physical activity.
Junior Sports' Leader Award (JSLA) Young Leaders' Award (YLA)
Our Year 10 JSLA Students invited pupils from our Cluster to a Top-Link Athletic ‘Quadkid’ themed Festival at Churchill. They really rose to the challenge, proving excellent role models to the young people they worked with. The feedback from Primary staff was very complimentary, so well done to all involved!
Henley Ngan; Catherine Hughes; Daniel GREGORY; Sophie Juleff; Holly BRABBINS; Jamie CHAMBERS; Alexander DAVIS; Ellis DIVER; Layton DIVER; Jake DORGAN; Joanne ELLIOTT; Edward FOWLER; Ashley GILES; Callum HAM; Emily HENDZEL; Paul HICKMAN; Chelsie INGLIS; Amy IRONS; Samantha JENKINS; Matthew JONES; Lucy KIRIKMAA; Joshua KNIGHT; Liam LLOYD; Robbie MACKAY; Harry MATTHEWS; Dominic MAYO; Hollyann MELLOR; Lawrence NEWBURY; Lauren O'HARA; Rosie PEGGE; Hannah TAVINER; Charlotte TULK; Joshua WELLS; Bridie MIDDLEMISS.
Many of this Year’s JSLA have worked really hard and been fully involved in volunteering!! Lots of the pupils have committed well beyond normal expectations and given up their own time to assist in the delivery of sport and activity throughout the SSP. I hope they continue to volunteer into Year 11.
I have also been continuing the lunchtime leader award training (YLA) with KS 2 pupils. The level of maturity of these young leaders has been exceptional. Primary Schools have been using leaders to monitor and facilitate lunchtime and after-school activities. We hope all schools will engage in the programme next year. Churchill will run the young leader, full award, in curriculum PE next academic year. Hopefully we will then be able to ask these young leaders to take on an active role within the running of the PE Department, as they continue down the ‘Step into Sport’ programme at KS3.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAAs)
Talent/Fitness Testing KS 2 transitional lessons
To help us provide a better teaching and learning environment for our Year 7 intake, I have been conducting physical and cognitive tests in all our feeder primary schools. We will use these results to highlight talent early and provide extension and enrichment, where appropriate. The results will also help us provide a better learning environment for those that may need some extra guidance. I’ve been really impressed with the positive attitude and hard work of our Year 6 pupils so far. These sessions, supported by PE staff have proved an excellent progression for pupils joining us in September.
Kwik Cricket
The qualifying matches have been and gone, with many primary schools engaging in area competitions. The tournament was open to boys and girls in Year 5/6 and was a real display of talent. The finals were held at Clevedon Lake Grounds in June. Well done to Wrington primary that narrowly missed out on a place in the Yr 6 County Finals.
Cluster sports day and Swimming Gala
On Thurs 10th June some of our Yr 10 JSLA visited Churchill Primary school to support our clusters’ annual Sport-day. They were a real credit to the school - helping with events, leading warm-ups and generally organising the day with the teachers from the school. They had a great time and especially enjoyed demonstrating the sack race, without the use of a
sack!
Our ‘excellent’ volunteers:
Methle AL-HINAI; Kerri BAKER; Adam Blackmore; Melissa BURROW; Megan COE; Cristian FLETCHER; Michael HARRIOTT; Megan HYDEN; Olivia JACKSON; Natalie MALE; Ryan MASON; Jacques PESCHEL; Luke PHILLIPS; Joseph REED; Kaye WANNERTON; Charles WEMYSS; Rosie WOODRUFF; Eleanor Bowerman-Whyatt.
We also helped support the annual Swimming Gala held at Churchill leisure centre. The member of staff from Blagdon was quoted as saying; “The pupils have been brilliant”. Again the following were a real credit to the school:
Kerri BAKER; Christopher BURR; Oliver BUSH; Maddie COX; Luke PENBERTHY; Joshua King; Adam TAYLOR; Oliver Bailey; Cristian FLETCHER; Charles WEMYSS
Well done to all involved.
Athletics
Athletics club has been going from strength to strength, as we’ve moved towards our whole school sports-day.
Every Wednesday athletics club has been running, offering pupils the chance to engage in field and track events without the rush and numbers sometimes experienced in curriculum time.
During the months of May and June both the Yr 9/10 Championships and the Year 7/8 Championships were held.
Selecting a team proved a monumental challenge with plenty of options, but only a prestigious few were able to commit.
I’ve ‘plucked’ some individual performances to note.
Yr 9/10 team:
Cara Short Discus 3rd Junior girls
Sam Roberts 800m 3rd Inter boys
Nick Thompson Long-jump 2nd Inter boys

National school sports week - London 2012
Along with the school development team (SDT) we have been formulating a plan to offer alternative sports during the wk beginning July 5th for ‘National Sports Week’, with an Olympic/Paralympic theme. The planned week was June 28th, but we had our house-matches and sports-day, so decided to offer some Olympic themed lessons on the Wed and Thurs of the aforementioned week. The SDT came up with the ideas and PE staff have been busily organising activities. During the week some groups will be offered: Goal-ball; Kabaddi; Trampolining and duathlons to name a few.
We hope that all involved with have a great time and get fully involved in the activities on offer!
House-match ‘pilot’ scheme
As well as running our major house-match sports we have been running a ‘pilot’ trial for some year groups, where we offered Badminton and Dodge-ball. The aim is to offer all pupils a chance to represent their ‘house’ at some point in the academic year, if they’ve not been picked for the main sports by heads’ of house.
Well done to those that took part. Here are some results from the lessons we were able to offer alternative activities in:
Yr 10 Dodge-ball Tudor beat Windsor 27-24
Yr 9 Badminton Tudor beat Windsor 47-22
Yr 9 Badminton Hanover beat Stuart 40–38
Yr 8 Badminton Tudor beat Windsor 50-28
Yr 7 Badminton Tudor 1st Stuart 2nd Windsor 3rd Hanover 4th
Rounders
11 teams descended on Churchill’s sports fields for our annual Rounders tournament. The pupils and staff had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon playing matches over two leagues. Thanks again to our JSLA, Yr 11 and CSLA who came in on an INSET day to help with umpiring and setting up the event!
Staff professional development
SSCO’s have been organising the delivery of N-Somerset’s professional development programme for school sport. The provision for Staff has been extensive and diverse. We hope that the training will empower all staff involved to deliver a more widespread and comprehensive curriculum.
Yr 5 Gifted and Talented identification
The SSp have been continuing our G&T identification programme across many schools in N-Somerset. We initially invited a number of pupils to a ‘workshop’ based day. Pupils worked across five areas of G&T identification – cognitive, social, physical, creative and personal.
They had a thoroughly exhausting, but entertaining day.
In June 40 indentified pupils attended a residential, where they were really ‘pushed’ to stretch themselves both physically and mentally over a range of activities. Although the programme has only been running for three years, the provision provided has been a resounding success. These pupils will now go onto join a G&T extension programme offered to Yr 6, 7 & 8.
Excellence academy
Terms 5 and 6 have seen a focus on our year 6 delivery. Each primary school was invited to send 4 pupils who had potential to extend their PE abilities, through a six week programme delivered by myself and Chris Millard (GB sprinter). We feel the pupils have really benefitted from the programme and we hope they will return to school (Churchill), PE lessons and community sport with some of the ‘tools’ needed to enrich their experience and develop further as performers.
If you would like to know more about the work being done in the Sport Partnership, please contact me at Churchill School.
