A very sunny Backwell Secondary School played host to the North Somerset Primary Schools QuadKids Final on Monday 21st June 2010. The event was organised by the North Somerset SSP and Wesport. QuadKids is a new and exciting athletics event designed to give more children the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of athletics and also to help identify the stars of tomorrow. The QuadKids competition is a team event, with eight athletes competing in four events to win points for their overall team score. Each athlete takes part in a 75m sprint, 600m run, standing long jump and vortex throw, these events are followed by relays to complete the competition.
Eleven teams from across North Somerset were competing for the chance to qualify for the QuadKids County Final, which will take place on Wednesday 14th July at Clifton College. All the athletes were from years 5&6 and the competing schools were; Christ Church, Grove, Kingshill, Mary Elton, St Andrews, St Marks, St Nicholas Chantry, Yatton and Yeo Moor.
There were some great results throughout the afternoon with every athlete trying their hardest to accumulate as many points as possible for their team. St Marks finished the afternoon in fourth place with a team total of 1419, third place went to Yeo Moor who recorded 1433 points. The runners up were Grove who finished with 1502 points and the 2010 champions were Yatton Juniors who recorded an impressive total of 1575 points. These four teams will now go on to represent North Somerset at the Quadkids County Final. There were some very impressive individual results, Pippa Reilly from Yatton and Alisha Bessant from St Andrews recorded the joint top overall score for the girls with a total of 204 points. The top scoring boy was Callum Walker from Yeo Moor who scored a total of 243 points.
Congratulations to all the teams who took part and made the event a real success. A big thank you to all the teachers and team managers who organised the teams at the event. Thanks also go to the SSCo’s, coaches, young leaders and volunteers who helped the event run smoothly.
