I am pleased to report that the first two terms of the 2011-12 academic year have seen a positive uptake in competition across the North Somerset School Sports Partnership (NSSSP) area. Primary cross country, football and sportshall athletics cluster events (organised by the new secondary teacher release) have been extremely well attended and the SSP football and cross country SSP finals have been as competitive as any hosted in the ten/eleven years of the NSSSP. Secondary events have also been well attended with an impressive 9 schools competing in the Year 9/10 sportshall athletics event at St Katherines and high numbers expected at the respective Worle/St Kath's year 7/8 events in Christmas week.
With the Christmas break fast approaching and with 2012 (Olympic year) weeks away, the excitement in our first home Olympics since 1948 is sure to be felt strongly. The 5th January marks 200 days until the Games open and will no doubt be the starting point for a considerable amount of interest across the school curriculum. A busy primary and secondary sporting calendar will be supported by the NSSSP and complimented further by the first Winter and Summer 'School Games' that provides level 3 competive oportunities for qualifying schools, as well as offering open taster events. The ever popular NSSSP dance festival has the theme of the Olympic and Paralympic values and will no doubt showcase some extraordinary performances from our young people. The Olympic Torch Relay will also pass through North Somerset in May and will hopefully be witnessed first hand by a significant number of our pupils, acting as a catalyst for lots of competive opportunities in term 5 and 6. It promises to be an exciting year and the NSSSP will hopefully be at the forefront of this activity, supporting the school network and providing opportunities for our young people to engage in high quality sporting competition/events!
